Hyderabad , Aug. 11

URANIUM Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL), the main supplier of uranium for the country's expanding nuclear power programme, has embarked on opening four new mines, two in Jharkhand, one in Meghalaya and another in Andhra Pradesh.

In addition to 12 of the 14 (two use enriched uranium) existing nuclear power reactors using natural uranium as fuel, the eight new ones being built by the Nuclear Power Corporation require uranium.

Since India has been denied supply of this material by countries which produce it, on the grounds that it has not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), there is no option but to quickly expand the base, according to Mr R. Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), UCIL.
