One-day strike by barge crew affects liquefied ammonia movement to FACT

Our Bureau

Kochi , Aug. 22

THE inland water movement of liquefied ammonia from Kochi Port to the public sector FACT in barges has been affected on Friday in view of the one-day token strike observed by the barge crew employed by the private contractor to transport the cargo.

The entire barge crew, belonging to the Cochin Port Labour Union, struck work since Thursday evening demanding salary revision. The dispute is on extent of salary revision to be given to the barge crew effective from January 1, 2002, Mr K.V.A.Iyer, Vice-President, CPLU, said in a statement issued here.

The strike call was given by the union after serving the proper notice to the management of the contract establishment Adreshir B. Cursetjee & Sons Ltd, the contractors for FACT for transport of ammonia in barges, Mr Iyer said.

He alleged that the management of the contract establishment did not come up with a satisfactory proposal to settle the demands raised by the union in the conciliation proceedings held on August 20 before the Regional Joint Labour Commissioner.

The barge crew, he said is working under strenuous operational conditions.
