AN international institute of music will be set up here for the promotion of and research into all streams of music, according to Dr Najma Heptullah, Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, who has been elected Chairperson of the governing council for the institute.

The institute will come up on an eight-acre plot, which falls within the jurisdiction of the Kinfra Video Park in suburban Thiruvananthapuram.

The institute will be in the name of Dr K.J. Yesudas, noted playback singer and concert musician, and will be run by a charitable trust. Preliminary work on the Rs 10-crore project has already begun.

An interactive museum would also be set up as part of the institute featuring wax statues of great musicians, both living and as well those of those who have left their indelible imprints in time.

A research centre, archives, library and a music theatre would also be included in the project.

The museum has been envisaged on the lines of the Madame Tussaud's in London. In the first phase, statues of 50 chosen musicians will be displayed. Students and visitors will be able to listen to the voice of and renderings by the musician.

In addition to the write-ups on the musicians, the interactive format will also provide glimpses of his/her repertoire and life at the touch of a button. Musical instruments and artefacts and the belongings of great musicians will also be displayed in the museum. An audio-visual exhibition on music will be a permanent feature.

The archives will include collections of books, records, CDs, spools and cassettes of all forms and kinds of music. The aim of the institute would be promotion of music - be it Carnatic, Hindustani, folk, drama songs, Western or film-based music.

Arrangements would be made for scholars for conducting research or carrying out higher studies in music and related fields.

Programmes featuring international artistes will be arranged by coordinating and cooperating with international universities and schools of music. The ultimate aim would be to convert the institute into a deemed university for the study and promotion of music and related arts.

The `Sangeethagramam' will be unique feature of the institute. This campus will feature arrangements for the stay, study and staging of programmes by reputed musicians and upcoming artistes.

They will be able to hold workshops and conduct music sessions here. An auditorium and other facilities will be also made available on the campus.
