Oilseeds & Edible Oil IICT gets aid for rice bran oil processing technology Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug. 28 THE Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) here has received financial support from the Technology Mission on Oilseeds, Pulses & Maize (TMOP&M) of the Ministry of Agriculture to support 15 industries located in nine States for promoting enzyme-based technology for rice bran oil processing. The IICT had developed an efficient technology using a commercially available enzyme to produce good quality edible rice bran oil. A patent had also been filed, Dr K.V. Raghavan, Director, IICT, told newspersons today. With minor modifications, the technology process can be adapted in the existing refineries. It is eco-friendly and does not generate effluent water. The technology has been demonstrated to six industries with 50 tonnes per day capacity. Another 13 industries were at various stages of implementation, the Mr Raghavan said. The TMOP&M is providing a grant-in-aid assistance of Rs 12 crore (Rs 75 lakh for each industry) for thesetting up of the 50-tonnes per day (tpd) rice bran oil refinery or to modernise the existing rice bran oil refineries to adopt the IICT technology. To sensitise more industries into adapting this technology, the IICT is organising a national seminar on "Recent R&D trends in rice bran oil processing and by-product utilisation' on August 30, in collaboration with the Oil Technologists Association of India (OTAI), as part of its diamond jubilee celebrations. The thrust of the workshop was to interact with the industries and offer the latest technology for transfer. Since less than 50 per cent of rice bran produced was being utilised for oil production in the country, the opportunities for setting up production facilities was immense, said Dr R.B.N. Prasad, Convener of the workshop. The Andhra Pradesh Minister for Agriculture, Mr Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, will inaugurate the workshop, which is the first scientific event of the IICT Diamond Jubilee celebrations and dedicated to the memory of Dr K.T. Acharya, the Founder-President of OTAI (South Zone) and Head of Oils & Fats Division of the IICT.
