ELECTRONIC Design Automation (EDA) tool vendor Magma Design Automation Inc on Thursday announced the setting up of its R&D centre in Bangalore.

It also said it planned to invest Rs 30 crore over the next two to three years in strengthening its India operations.

The company is also setting up a product specialist team, which would address specific domains of complex nanometer integrated circuit (IC) design.

Mr Charlie Simon, Vice-President (Customer Support Operations), Magma, said the company saw India emerging as the key technology/design hub for the IC industry with a strong and growing local market for EDA tools, currently estimated at $40 million.

"Magma is seizing the initiative by committing significant resources in R&D, application engineering, sales and support to take advantage of this opportunity," he said.

The company is also setting up sales and marketing team locally to serve its large customer base and facilitate the migration to Magma by new customers.

It is setting up a Field Application Engineering team to provide technical support to current customers to enable the successful completion of their IC designs. Magma's Indian clientele comprises companies such as Wipro and HCL, among others.

Mr Lung Chu, Corporate Vice-President (Asia-Pacific operations), said, "India has a significant advantage in terms of availability of technical talent, language and location. With China and Taiwan emerging as manufacturing hubs for the IC industry, we see India well positioned to emerge as preferred design/R&D hub."

Mr Anand Anandkumar, Managing Director, Magma Design Automation India, said,

"Our local presence will significantly empower us to leverage the growing opportunity presented in India."
