Supply Chain Management DHL Worldwide plans expansion Nina Varghese
Chennai , Aug. 28 DHL Worldwide Express plans to increase its presence in the express and logistics market in India. Mr Chris Callen, Country Manager, DHL Worldwide Express (India) Pvt Ltd, said that at present the company has a 65 per cent share of the Euro150-million express market in India and has earmarked Euro50 million for infrastructure in the country to grow this share. Mr Callen said that the investment has been made over a period of three years and a part of the investment was made last year. The company at present is growing at a rate of 35 per cent and some of the investments have gone into equipping the company's own gateways at the major airports. It will be starting to operate out of its own facility in Delhi by early October, he said. DHL has plans to start operating out of its own facilities at other gateway airports such as Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore. The company will have its own bonded warehouses with air and landside access and will also have facility for Customs clearance. Initially the company will be hiring warehouse space and is also considering the possibility of investment in its own space. Mr Callen said that the company was considering both short-term and long-term possibilities. This would ensure smoother throughput for the cargo, he said. Logistics companies do much more than just carry documents, samples, swatches and packages these days, Mr Callen said. DHL, for instance, among other products, offers a warehousing facility of strategic parts for its global partners. Mr Mark Ketelaar, Business Acquisition Support Group Manager, DHL International (S) Pte Ltd, said that the company has eight warehouses in India, which support strategic partners in India for their spare parts requirements. DHL warehouses and manages inventory of the crucial parts for the company and delivers it at the specific time. In India DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, a part of DHL, has also tied up with the Indian company, Lemuir, for air and ocean freight products. Mr Callen said that this company would be able to handle the larger consignments.
