MEPZ to start digital signature facility soon

Our Bureau

Chennai , Aug 28

THE MEPZ-Special Economic Zone is moving towards becoming a paperless office with the first step being a digital signature facility enabling all units in the zone to correspond using digital signature, according to Ms Malini Shankar, Joint Development Commissioner, MEPZ-Special Economic Zone.

Addressing a seminar on Business opportunities in Special Economic Zones organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, Ms Shankar said that it recently launched its Web services to all the export-oriented units and the SEZ. This was being used for submitting reports and collecting data, filing applications and requesting for permissions, she said.

To spruce up operations in the MEPZ, she said that the zone has launched a public-private initiative in municipal solid waste management, and initiated efforts in water recycling and greening.

In an informal chat with Business Line, Ms Shankar said that the digital signature facility for its registered users will be in place by September 30, after which the units will be able to correspond with the zone using the digital signature. The MEPZ-SEZ is the registering authority for digital signatures, which can be obtained for a fee of Rs 600.

Following the declaration of the MEPZ as an SEZ in January, there has been an influx of investments in the zone and all the space has been sold out. Engineering industries have accounted for most of the investments and they account for a major share of exports, which grew to Rs 822 crore last year compared to Rs 760 crore in the previous year. The zone is also looking at enhancing efficiencies of operations and is sprucing up appearances.
