Nod for sericulture project

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Centre has accepted in principle a project to introduce ericulture in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 3.71 crore. The project was prepared by the State Department of Sericulture and presented to the Union Ministry of Textiles.

Trial rearings were organised in the major castor growing districts of Nalgonda, Mahboobnagar and the tapioca growing East Godavari district. The results were encouraging with farmers getting an additional income of Rs 6,000-7,000 per annum, which is equivalent to castor seed crop, according to the Sericulture Department.

Encouraged by these results and acceptance of the project proposal, the State is launching it on Friday. A workshop for the farmers of these three districts to promote ericulture is being organised by the Central Silk Board, Bangalore and the State Department on Friday.
