`Gana Kokila' to be feted

HYDERABAD: The who's who of the music field of the South Indian film industry is expected to be present at a function to honour `Gana Kokila', Ms Rao Balasaraswati Devi, on her 75th birthday on August 30 in the city.

The Chairman of the Visu Group of companies, which is organising the felicitation programme title `Oka Tara Puttina Vela', Mr C.C. Reddy, told newspersons that a galaxy of film stars, radio and TV artistes and playback singers would be present.

Ms Devi had lent her voice for the first-ever solo on HMV at age six and at 12 she was the first to give light music on AIR and in 1940 the first playback singer in south Indian film industry. Her well known films include Devdas, Swapnasundari, Laila Majnu, Showkar, etc. She has more than 2,000 songs to her credit.
