Bangalore , Aug. 29

TATA Teleservices Ltd today said it plans to add over one lakh subscribers by March next year including pre-paid services which would commence in two months' time.

``With the existing towns itself, we should cross over two lakh subscribers. With the addition of 10 to 15 towns, it should be more,'' Tata Teleservices' Chief Operating Officer for Karnataka, Mr Prabhat Pani, told newspersons here. He said there are already around 90,000 subscribers including 50,000 for wireless phones.

He said the company had so far invested around Rs 300 crore out of the Rs 1,000-crore investment earmarked for Karnataka for over a period of six years.

Mr Pani said Tata Teleservices would offer fax and Internet services on its fixed wireless phones in Karnataka within the next 45 days. ``Testing has been completed and operational plans are ready. We should be rolling out the services within 45 days,'' Mr Pani said. These services would be provided under the Indicom brand.

He said fixed wireless services, which had already been launched in Bangalore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Mandya and Mysore, would be expanded to Shimoga and Belgaum soon. Wireline services, currently available at Bangalore, would be provided at Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad shortly, he said. The company is also in the process of deploying a 2,000 plus kilometre backbone network in the State.

Earlier, the Karnataka Minister of State for IT and Tourism, Mr D.B. Inamdar, unveiled the company's `Triad' public payphone booth. There are already 2,000 phone booths in existence. The new booth has been created with a better design and has more space. "The new booths have specious interiors providing privacy and comfort to the consumer while making a call," Mr Pani said.

Tata Teleservices currently operates in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The company offers wireline, fixed wireless and CDMA mobile services. For the corporate customers, it offers Internet and data traffic such as ISDN, DSL and xDSL and virtual private networks.
