Industry Associations KCCI's plea to members against child labour Our Bureau
Mangalore , Sept. 2 KEEPING in tune with the Government's effort to declare Karnataka a child labour-free State by the year 2007, the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has appealed to its member organisations to take a pledge not to employ persons below the age of 14 in any of their works. The President of KCCI, Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, said as responsible employers, the members of KCCI must join hands with the district administration to make Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts free of child labour practice. Quoting the figures available, Mr Prabhu said that the drive taken up by the Deputy Labour Commissioner of Hassan division had identified three cases of child labour in Dakshina Kannada and four cases in Udupi district. He welcomed the action taken by the Deputy Labour Commissioner at Hassan, Mr Jinkallappa, and urged the member organisations to come forward to help the Government in rooting out the evil practice. He also requested the organisations to prominently display the board stating `we do not employ child labour' or `children should be in schools and we employ only adults' in their premises after ensuring that they do not have any worker below the age of 14.
