Climate & Weather Cloud seeding in northern Karnataka districts to begin today Our Bureau
Bangalore , Sept. 2 TWO weeks into `Project Varuna', the northern Karnataka region will see week-long cloud seeding operations from September 3. The region has been worst hit by the drought and the operation was originally planned from today. The aircraft was delayed by a day as it was readying for the week-long operations, according to Weather Modification Inc (WMI), which is conducting rain augmentation exercise for the past couple of weeks. Last week, a team of experts conducted sample surveys in Hubli and Gadag to test the cloud pattern, logistics for radar installation besides airport and ground support at Hubli and Gadag. The aircraft was also flown to Hubli for preliminary tests. Meanwhile, the Karnataka Government is seriously considering the installation of another radar at a strategic point in the northern parts. Experts have been advising on this, as monsoon clouds would be available only during September. A radar costs around Rs 1.3 crore and will help to identify the clouds accurately. The company said, "Logistics are being worked out to keep the Hubli airport functional for both day and night operations. The State Government is making all efforts to impress upon the Airports Authority of India to provide immediate and adequate infrastructural support for the cloud seeding operation." Until the runway lights are made operational for night landing of the aircraft, cloud seeding would be conducted mainly during the day. The US-based WMI is jointly conducting the Rs 5.6-crore rain enhancement programme over Karnataka over 90 days using a specially done-up Piper Cheyenne aircraft. Meanwhile, the Maharashra Government has signed an agreement with Weather Modification Inc to take up cloud seeding in seven districts from September 10. Recently, a team of officials from Maharashra led by the Irrigation Secretary, Mr N.D. Vadnare, visited the Master Control Centre at Jakkur Aerodrome.
