Foodgrain merchants against power tax

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Sept. 2

THE Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has said that the recent State Government order of levying five per cent tax on low-tension electricity consumers was an unwarranted step.

In a statement here, the Association Secretary, Mr V. Dhanasekaran, has said the order was primarily an added burden of the untold sufferings of domestic users.

Only recently in March, the State Government had hiked the power tariff based on the recommendation of Tamilnadu Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Mr Dhanasekaran has urged the Government to initiate adequate efforts to plug the 18 per cent loss caused due to the transmission and distribution of power and to reconsider the decision of taxing the captive power producers keeping the larger interest of the trade and industry in view.
