Good response to StarOffice software, says Sun Micro

Bangalore , Sept. 4

SUN Microsystems claimed on Thursday that its office productivity suite StarOffice 6.0 software has received overwhelming response in the Indian sub-continent in less than a year from its official launch.

Sun Micro India's aggressive thrust on StarOffice 6.0, which runs across multiple platforms including Linux, Solaris and Windows, has yielded success with major organisations deploying the software suite in their offices with some of them even replacing other office suites, said a company press release.

"Initial sales clearly indicate that a pent-up demand exists among consumers for a quality, low-cost, multi-platform office productivity suite such as StarOffice 6.0 software," said Mr Kia-Chiang Ng, Director Mid-Market Segment, Sun Microsystems, Asia South. "StarOffice 6.0 software delivers excellent value to the individual, family or small business seeking an alternative to more expensive proprietary office productivity suites," he said.

Customers in India using StarOffice include HDFC Bank, ICICI One Source, Apnaloan, J.K. Corp, the Karnataka PWD Department, Department of IT-Karnataka, select Government schools and colleges and also defence organisations. StarOffice 6.0 software customers can expect a savings of 50 to 75 per cent in licensing costs in comparison to proprietary office productivity suites with more restrictive licensing policies, the release said.

"In a scenario where enterprises are looking to bring down costs and increase productivity, StarOffice has emerged to be a viable option. In the last few months, StarOffice has gained substantial penetration into the Indian markets across segments like corporations, home users and the Government," said Mr K.P. Unnikrishnan, Country Head, Marketing, Sun Microsystems India.
