New Delhi , Sept. 8

ASIMO, the world's most advanced humanoid robot, has landed in India.

It greeted people in Hindi, walked around, climbed steps, and couldn't resist the temptation to shake a leg to the tune of a Dil Chahta Hai number at a press conference here.

Created by Honda Motor Company, Japan, ASIMO (advanced step in innovative mobility) will be in India for a month.

The visit is organised by Honda Motor Co, along with its four Indian partners - Hero Honda, Honda Siel Cars, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India and Honda Siel Power Products.

During its stay in India, ASIMO will demonstrate its abilities and skills to interact with humans and its character of assistance and support to people.

The robot will meet children, academicians, scientists and the general public.

ASIMO is 120 centimetres tall and weighs 52 kg.

It took 14 years, seven experimental model and three prototypes for Honda to develop this robot.

At present, there are 50 ASIMOs around the world.

It is enabled by a new walking technology — intelligent real-time flexible walking or iWalk - that lets the robot walk smoother and more natural.

ASIMO is also capable of interpreting the postures and gestures of humans and moving independently in response.

Honda does not intend to make ASIMO for commercial purposes, but a few robots are now being used as a tour guide in museums and a greeter in big companies such as IBM.

However, Honda says in the future, ASIMO may act as a friendly helper at homes, providing assistance to those who lack full mobility.

It may also be used to handle tasks that are dangerous for humans, such as fire fighting or handling toxic wastes.
