Real Estate & Construction FaL-G technology for using fly ash in housing schemes Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Sept. 8 THE Fly Ash Building Material Manufacturers' Association (FABMAS) has come forward to execute a housing scheme at Singhnagar in Vijayawada under `Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana' scheme. According to a press release issued here on Monday by the Director of the Institute for Solid Waste Research and Ecological Balance (INSWAREB), Mr N. Kalidas, the Vizag-based institute promotes FaL-G technology, which entails use of fly ash for construction purposes. He said that the State Government had sanctioned 4,000 low-cost houses under the scheme, but due to the poor soil conditions at the allotted site the houses were designed as framed structures on pile foundation, pushing up the costs. Against the budget allotment of Rs 50,000 for each house, the actual costs were working out at Rs 61,000 or so and contractors were not willing to take up the work. At this juncture, the association has come forward to take up the venture and the Krishna district collector, Mr K. Prabhakar Reddy, has agreed to entrust construction of 200 houses in the first phase and, if it is found satisfactory, the remaining houses would also be entrusted to the members of the association. Mr Kalidas said the association had over a thousand members at the national level and over 500 at the State level. The capable ones would be given the work and, by employing FaL-G technology, the cost of each housing unit would be brought down by Rs 5,000 or so. He said the INSWAREB would extend technical training and guidance to those executing the project at the site and a quality control lab would be set up. He also urged the authorities to make greater use of FaL-G technology in executing such Government-sponsored housing schemes as it would not only bring down costs, but also pave the way for disposal of fly ash generated by thermal power stations and others.
