PSI to implement AIDS campaign in 12 major ports

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 8

POPULATION Services International (PSI), a voluntary organisation, is implementing HIV/AIDS prevention programme in the 12 major ports with funding support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Mr Justin DeNormandie, regional programme manager, said at a press meet here that port communities were crucial as they served as a convergence point for many Indians for contracting the disease and transmitting it to others.

Intensive condom marketing ensuring availability and visibility in all types of retail outlets and high impact communication campaigns were part of the programme christened Operation Lighthouse. High quality centres providing affordable, accessible and confidential voluntary counselling were set up in all major port towns and cities.

Besides, a risk perception campaign as part of AIDS awareness programme was launched across the State by the PSI from Monday, he said, with emphasis on safe sex and the dangers of promiscuity.

He said PSI was operating in 70 countries all over the world and in India it was established in 1988.

In Visakhapatnam, Operation Lighthouse was being implemented in Jalaripeta Colony, fishing harbour area, Malkapuram, port area and Gajuwaka.
