Industry Associations CII-sponsored `green' meet from Sept 19 Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 8 TRIGGERING a `national movement' green business, the Confederation of Indian Industry and its Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre is holding a two-day summit beginning September 19 with the theme `Green is competitive'. Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, Mr G.V. Prasad, Chairman of the summit, and Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dr Reddy's Laboratories, said the idea was to promote the concept of achieving industrial development with minimal environmental impact and in harmony with nature. "Here, the word green doesn't indicate afforestation. It involves reuse, recycling, utilisation of environment friendly and clean energy technology and energy efficiency, ultimately leading to sustainable development," he said. "You can be more and more competitive vouching for green approach," he said. The two-day `international conference-cum-exposition on green technologies' will be attended by experts from India and abroad. Dr Kath Williams, Vice-Chairperson of US Green Business Council, Mr Jeffery J Fulgham, Global Director of GE Water Technologies Inc, and Mr Micheal Krause, Executive Director of The Green Institute, are among the speakers. The summit is being supported by ICICI Bank, the Andhra Pradesh Government and USAID. Mr S. Raghupathy, Senior Adviser CII-GBC, said the centre would focus on establishing recycling industry, adoption of green technologies, incubation of green businesses and financing green projects in the next five to eight years. Mr S. Padmanaban, Senior Adviser of USAID, said the green approach meant to support sustainable development of the industry. GBC `movement': With a view to promoting the green concept among Indian industry, the GBC is taking up a series of initiatives. "Five corporates, including ITC Bhadrachalam, will be made world-class energy efficient bodies," Mr Raghupathy said. "We will facilitate a green building movement in the country. To start with five green buildings will come up in Delhi (2), Hyderabad (2) and Bangalore (1) by 2005. Besides, about 10 corporates have shown interest in this regard," he said and added that Green Building Congress would be held in Hyderabad in August next. Besides, the centre would also work on water management and renewable energy as well.
