Hyderabad to host Stone India 2004

Hyderabad , Sept. 9

HITEX, the venue for international exhibitions and fairs, would be expanded to create additional space for exhibits, house a convention centre and a star hotel, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, said here on Tuesday.

The facility spread over 100 acres was already booked for next year for international and national exhibitions, Mr Naidu said, while announcing that Stone India 2004, the international show for stone mining, processing, machinery and services would be held at HITEX during January 31 to February 2, 2004.

Urging the organisers to make Stone India 2004 an annual event and the city a permanent location, Mr Naidu said steps would be taken to encourage value-addition in the mineral industry. Special focus would be laid on granites, since the State is well-known for a number of high demand type of stones such as Black Galaxy and Absolute Black stones.

Mr Naidu said the Government wanted to insist that processing of stones should be done within the State.

At present, there is a big demand for raw stone, especially granites. The processing is done abroad and finished products reach the Indian markets again. Italy is one of the European countries where interest in stones from Andhra Pradesh is high.

A high-level team of officials and industry leaders from the stone industry, especially granites, recently visited Verona, Italy, to promote business and collaborations, according to Mr P.V. Rao, Special Secretary (Industries) of Andhra Pradesh.

In a bid to promote the mineral sector, the State Government has issued 32 permits for reconnaissance for gold and diamond exploitation.

The State was also among the first to announce a comprehensive mineral policy, he said.

The President of Stone Association of India, Mr Gautam Chand Jain, said the event had been planned on the lines of a business-cum-tourism meet, in view of the increasing tourism facilities in the city. Several international exhibitors are expected to take part.

At the HITEX venue, a special facility for customs clearance against ATA Carnet at Hyderabad for exemption of customs duty on goods imported for display has been provided.
