Human Resources LG Electronics to double manpower in R&D unit Neha Kaushik
New Delhi , Sept. 9 Korean major LG Electronics will almost double its manpower this year at its software R&D facility in Bangalore in order to cater to the expansion it is planning in its research and development capabilities in India. According to Mr Nam K. Woo, President & CEO, Digital Display & Media Company, LG Electronics Inc, "We are looking to almost double the manpower base at our software R&D facility in Bangalore, LG Soft India. At present, the R&D facility employs around 150 people". The Bangalore unit carries out software development work for the parent company, for high-end products such as NDPs or the "smart" consumer durables and electronics. According to an LG Electronics official, the manpower at the unit is likely to be increased to 250 by the end of the year. A similar expansion is targeted for the research and development centre of LG Electronics India. The local electronics and durables manufacturing arm of LG also carries out R&D work in the field of hardware. "We would be increasing our manpower from the current 50 to 150 this year," said Mr Vipin Gupta, Deputy General Manager (R&D - CTV), LG Electronics India. Apart from R&D for the domestic market, the division also does "customised" R&D for countries it is exporting its products to. So while for the Asean countries, it has come out with customised CTVs that concentrate on the sound element, for markets in West Asia it has launched CTVs with local language facility. With LG set to emerge as an export hub for varied product categories post the commissioning of its second plant in Pune, the company's focus and investment on R&D is likely to increase further.
