New Delhi , Sept. 9

ON the second day of ASIMO's (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), the world's most advanced humanoid robot, month long visit to India, a one-day seminar on `Robotics', to discuss the current developments and the future of robotics in India was organised in Delhi. Scientists, academicians, and experts from the field of robotics presented an overview of their research done on robotics.

Inaugurating the seminar, Prof V.S. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, said, "The modern manufacturing scene is witnessing a revolution in all aspects. In order to remain globally competitive and meet the increased levels of quality, the need for robotisation is gaining importance. According to a recent United Nation's Report on World's Industrial Robots, co-authored by the International Federations of Robotics, close to a million units of robots are in operation. India, though at a nascent stage, has also started using it."

Scientist Dr M.S. Ramakumar from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Bangalore, delivered the keynote address.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, "A lot of work is being done in robotics research and development in different institutes within the country. A number of technologies have evolved in the process. In the next few years, India will be self-sufficient and in a position to supply this technology to other countries."
