The exchange of experts between the two countries has been proceeding on a large scale, an exercise that has been beneficial for both the parties.

New Delhi , Sept. 9

INDIA and Israel have decided to work towards signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase co-operation in various fields of agriculture. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting that the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh, had with the visiting Israeli Agriculture Minister, Mr Yisrael Katz, here on Tuesday.

With both countries showing a keen interest in greater co-operation in the fields of horticulture, floriculture and aquaculture, it was also decided to set up a joint committee of officials that would have frequent meetings for discussions on various agricultural issues. Emphasis was also laid on the need to exchange the latest technologies in these and other related fields.

During the discussions, Mr Singh expressed India's desire to learn from the Israeli experience in water management. In this context, he pointed out that India could also benefit from Israel's experience in developing a number of drought-resistant varieties of crops. Another area in which the Indian side showed keen interest in collaborating with Israel was in the development of fodder.

Reciprocating India's suggestions, the Israeli Minister said there was a lot of potential in closer co-operation in agriculture between the two countries. The exchange of experts between the two countries, he said, has been proceeding on a large scale, an exercise that has been beneficial for both the parties.

Noting that Israel was also a largely semi-arid country, Mr Katz said there were many characteristics that were in common with India. This, he said, was all the more reason for the two countries to collaborate in a number of projects.
