Rs 1.4-cr research unit set up at Indian Food Park

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Sept.10

A RS 1.4-crore R&D facility devoted to food research has been set up at the Indian Food Park (IFP) at Palavanatham near Virudhunagar.

The pilot unit has been developed by the Coimbatore-based Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women with financial aid from the Ministry of Food Processing and Industries.

The plant consists of 40 pilot level machineries for product development and improvement of shelf life. Among its activities are to undertake commercial feasibility studies, suggest innovative and low-cost packaging alternatives and nutrition strengthening aspects etc. The pilot plant has machineries such as mini-spray drier, pulveriser, blender, pulper and mixer to facilitate trial runs for the units.

According to Mr Shanmuganathan, Chairman and Managing Director, IFP, the entrepreneurs will have all facilities in the park to set up a unit for effective functioning. Besides, they can also get a subsidy on investment from the Ministry of Food Processing subject to a maximum of Rs 50 lakhs; obtain incentives on packaging and pre-cooling and source raw material easily from here, he said.

Mr K. Kulandaivelu, Chancellor of the Deemed University, said the plant was symbolic of industry-institute initiative to reap the benefits of research for a larger purpose of growth and development of the country. There is need for India to focus on preservation of processed goods which at present is at a low level of 6-7per cent. Availability of all facilities at one place served a greater purpose of keeping the prices stable, thus benefiting both the farmers as well as the consumers, he added.
