Greater Noida to have its own `Connaught Place'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 10

CONNAUGHT Place has always been the most popular destination for Delhi's youth and visitors, be it for shopping, eating or simply for hanging out. But the city's most popular landmark has fast become a traffic nightmare during peak office hours and lost much of its old charm.

To cash in on the brand equity of Connaught Place, real estate firm Omaxe Construction Ltd on Wednesday announced that it would build a replica of the circular market in Greater Noida.

Spread over 14 acres, Omaxe Connaught Place will come up at a cost of Rs 500 crore and would be completed by 2006-07, the Omaxe Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Rohtas Goel told reporters here on Wednesday.

The facility would consist of a large format hypermarket, a large amphitheatre, a city walk concept within the complex, departmental and lifestyle stores, food courts, office complexes, a hotel and an eight screen multiplex theatre, Mr Goel said.

"Although it will borrow the basic design from the original Connaught Place, it will be created with its own unique aesthetic value and latest technical concepts in the construction industry," he said.

The project is being funded by the Omaxe group internally and through private investors, he said.

The Omaxe General Manager (Sales and Marketing), Mr Abdul Bari said that the company had appointed Cushman and Wakefield to carry out a feasibility study for the project.
