Water Dikshit defends dual water pipelines Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept. 10 THE Delhi Jal Board has recently adopted the concept of dual water pipelines in a bid to utilise the available resources more effectively. Despite criticism of the system of separate pipelines for drinking and washing, the Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit, said that it was the best way of making drinking water available to a larger number of people and conserve resources. Inaugurating the 5th Water Asia conference in the Capital, she said that treated water could be used for drinking while ground water could be tapped for non-drinking needs. In addition, it was also important to recycle waste water for irrigation and set up rain water harvesting systems, she added. "The good monsoon has raised the water table of Delhi this year, but to overcome the vagaries of nature, it is important for all large buildings and complexes to put in place rain water harvesting systems," Ms Dikshit said. The Delhi Jal Board CEO, Mr P.K. Tripathi, said that the water situation in the Capital was "comfortable", but per capita availability was on the decline due to rise in population. "In the long run, water availability in Delhi will decline because the existing resources will not be enough to cater to the growing population. To address the issue, we have decided to encourage dual piping. The system has been successfully adopted by several colonies in Noida and Ghaziabad," he added.
