AP groundwater potential study to be completed soon

Hyderabad , Sept. 10

THE state of groundwater in Andhra Pradesh, which could be useful for the development of agriculture is expected to be fully compiled by February-March of 2004 by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), here.

Under a project called `Jaladarthi', supported by the Andhra Pradesh Government, nearly 70 per cent of the work has already been completed so far, according to Dr S.M. Dutta, Head of the GSI's south zone operations based in Hyderabad.

Groundwater potential and availability in all the districts would be surveyed using geological methods. The GSI has earlier done a study of the freshwater Kolleru lake. It is being equipped with the latest facilities to undertake challenging tasks, Dr Dutta told newspersons on the sidelines of a national symposium on "Applied Geochemistry in exploration of minerals and oil", organised by the Indian Society of Applied Geochemists.

The laboratories of the GSI here are among the first to get major funding in the organisation's upgradation initiative. It has invested nearly Rs 3 crore and sourced robotic facilities for the chemical laboratory from France, he said.

Dr Dutta said a modern chemical laboratory was being set up to undertake extensive geochemistry activity.
