SE Asian health ministers form group on traditional medicine

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 9

THE health ministers of World Health Organisation South East Asian Region countries on Tuesday decided to set up a working group on traditional systems of medicine.

The working group is expected to be constituted soon and would study the pharmacopoeia of different traditional systems of medicine, seek scientific validation and examine patent compatibility of these systems, the Union Health Minister, Ms Sushma Swaraj, told reporters here.

India has offered to host the first meeting of the group and a recommendation would be made to the WHO to set up the body, with its headquarters in the South East Asian region, she said.

The group would also act as a forum for exchange of knowledge and experiences in traditional systems of medicine, the Minister said.

Progress of the Geneva Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was another item on the agenda. The group noted that Bangladesh, Thailand and North Korea had already signed the Convention, while India had approved and was expected to sign soon. Other countries were requested to expedite the signing of the Convention, she said.
