Outsourcing Boom seen in BPO spin-off jobs Our Bureau
Bangalore , Sept. 12 WHILE huge forecasts are being made about the booming ITES sector, little thought has gone into the growth of the ancillary industries in the industry. Speaking at CII's National Service Sector Conclave in Bangalore on Friday, Mr Mohandas Pai, Chief Financial Officer, Infosys Technologies and Chairman, Progeon Ltd., highlighted the potential, "By the year 2010, $1-1.2 trillion worth of processes will take place in the BPO industry and India will create about two million jobs in the sector". This would mean the transportation industry would be worth about Rs 1,500 crore, the food industry catering to these employees worth more than Rs 1,000 crore and the training industry would be Rs 1,500-crore industry, he stated. Creating world-class facilities for these companies would become imperative, which means the industry would need around 120 million sq ft of space and the housekeeping for these facilities would cost about Rs 1,000 crore. "Of late, the security services has seen a major boom. It will be worth about Rs 1,200 crore in 2010," Mr Pai predicted. He also felt that the selection of vendors would be tough as the industry was going to be huge. Expressing the same concern, Mr Raman Roy, Chairman and Managing Director, Wipro Spectramind, said, "The industry is going to grow in a geometric progression. But are we up to the task of seeing the opportunity and realising it?" Mr Prashant Shankaran, Head, Contact Centre, Digital Globalsoft Ltd, drew up some guidelines for the growth of the ancillary units: "There should be a planned development of centres of excellence in different cities and there should be shared risk and reward culture."
