Increase in gross bank credit

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Sept.13

GROSS bank credit has recorded a sharp increase of Rs 4,599 crore for the fortnight ended August 29, to touch Rs 7,32,000 crore. In the previous week, there was a decrease of Rs 1,430 crore in gross bank credit.

While a section of bankers hope that this might be a sign of a revival in credit pick up, others caution, that it might be too early to pop the champagne corks just yet. "This kind of a sudden increase in figure of bank credit is not reflective of anything significant, unless it is sustained over a period of time. The current increase could well be due to an increase in demand in any particular segment of the economy and not spread across sectors'', according to a senior banking analyst.
