Software SPIN Bangalore, Nasscom to provide SMEs forum for interaction Anjali Prayag
Bangalore , Sept. 18 WHAT is well known is that India has the largest number of SEI CMM Level 5 companies in the world and Bangalore houses more than half of these. But what is relatively unknown is that for more than a decade now, a group of software engineers in the city have been networking and improving software quality in the industry. SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network), initiated by Software Engineering Institute, provides a forum for software engineers to share ideas on software process improvement. And according to Mr Vishweshwar Hegde, General Manager, Quality, MindTree Consulting Pvt Ltd, "SPIN Bangalore is the most active among the 800 SPINs in the world mainly because Bangalore provides a good ecosystem for the initiative. There is convergence of knowledge, best practices and a large number of software companies interacting with multiple organisations worldwide here." SPIN Bangalore, started in 1992, currently has 1,100 members and is one of the largest in the world. It has helped generate data, analysis and best practices in the areas of productivity, cycle time, cost of quality and defects. On September 20, SPIN Bangalore along with Nasscom is going to launch a Special Interest Group for SMEs (small and medium enterprises). This will involve training, benchmarking and experience sharing from high maturity organisations. It will also work at a low-cost solution to SEI assessment for SMEs through a collaborative approach. SPIN already has special interest groups (SIGs) on benchmarking, project management, knowledge management and information systems. The SIG on benchmarking has collected data from 180 projects in 16 high maturity organisations in the last three years. "Also lot of ideas get generated at these meetings and we want to get into IP management with the help of Nasscom," said Mr Hegde. The forum will also have a CMM Darbaar to provide consultancy to SMEs from high maturity organisations. According to Ms Poornima Shenoy, Regional Director, Nasscom, Bangalore, "We believe that our SME members can benefit from this collaboration and hence our SME SIG is working closely with SPIN."
