New Intel chipsets, products for better mobile computing

Vipin V. Nair

San Jose , Sept. 18

INTEL Corporation on Wednesday announced a series of new chipsets and technologies that would take mobile computing beyond the `Hotspots'.

The new products for mobile computing and telephony would enhance seamless connectivity and user experience even as they lessen power consumption of gadgets for longer battery life. What the microprocessor giant would offer over the next 12-18 months are a new version of its Centrino processor codenamed `Dothan'; a new computing platform dubbed `Sonoma' and a new processor codenamed `Bulverde' for cell phones and PDAs.

Through these products, Intel believes mobile computing will be able to transcend the present limitations of wireless technology. In the near future, notebooks and PDAs will be able to switch between the WiFi and cellular networks by automatically choosing the network they are in. Also, next generation mobile phones will offer improved gaming and video at lower power consumption.

To start with, Intel launched a new chipset, the `855GME', that offers new power-saving features and high performance for graphics and memory for notebook computers powered by the Centrino processors.

Announcing the shipping of the new chipset here at the Intel Developer Forum, Mr Anand Chandrasekhar, Vice-President and Co-General Manager of the company's Mobile Platforms Group, said the new chipset would help reduce battery consumption by about 30 per cent by managing display image brightness and contrast. ``The Centrino is ramping faster than the other chips. We are continuing to improve on the chipset,'' said Mr Chandrasekhar.

The number of HotSpots, which provides WiFi connectivity, has touched 20,000 worldwide, doubling from a year ago, thanks to the introduction of Centrino, he claimed.

Mr Chandrasekhar said the Sonoma mobile platform would be ready by second half of 2004. It incorporates the new Centrino version, a next-generation audio interface called `Azalia' for better audio features, the integrated 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN capability for faster and seamless wireless communication across networks and enhanced storage and graphics.

In the world of mobile telephony, the new Bulverde processors based on the `XScale' technology will enable mobile phones to capture higher quality pictures and deliver rich multimedia experience while ensure longer battery life. The Bulverde will have features such as Intel Wireless MMX, the Quick Capture and Speed Step technologies incorporated, said Mr Hans Geyer, Intel Vice-President and General Manager of the PCA Components Group.
