Info-Tech - IT-enabled Services

Info management infrastructure is the differentiator

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 18

COMPANIES across all sectors need to switch their focus in having a sound information management infrastructure than just an information technology infrastructure.

For companies in BPO (business process outsourcing) and IT-enabled service sectors, managing information of their customers and within their own firm is going to be a major challenge.

The difference between successful firms and failed ones was how they managed their information infrastructure , said Mr Manoj Chugh, President, India and SAARC, EMC Data Storage Systems (India) Private Ltd, while speaking at Connect 2003 here on Thursday.

According to Mr Chugh, companies need to address the issue of networking and managing the islands of information available within their organisations.

``One need to ensure availability of the right service level and right application at the right cost and at the right time to customers,'' he said.

Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, President and COO, Cognizant Technology Solutions, said the challenge for IT industry was not about strategy but about executing the strategy well.

To move up the value chain, how companies deliver value proposition to customer in the globally competitive scenario was a key challenge facing companies in the software services, he said.

IT is part of a basic infrastructure, similar to power, road or rail. The entire IT is today a commodity. Absence of an IT infrastructure would lead to chaos in an organisation, he said.
