See reason, Chittivalasa mill management tells workers

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 18

THE management of Chittivalasa jute mill in Visakhapatnam district has appealed to the workers "not to be misled by propaganda and act sensibly'' after considering the issues at stake.

The mill has been out of production since June over an industrial dispute. In a statement issued at the mill, the management urged the workers to understand the circumstances, which had led to the issue of the notice to the unions under Section 9 (A) of the Industrial Disputes Act resulting in a wage cut.

"There were four composite jute mills till recently in the State and three other jute mills have recently acquired the status of composite mills and some other existing twine mills have partly converted themselves into composite mills, taking the number to nine or so.

All the three other major composite mills in the State - Nellimarla jute mill in Vizianagaram district, Sri Krishna jute mill at Eluru in West Godavari, Bajrang jute mill at Guntur - are paying much lower wages than Chittivalasa and the recently converted mills are also operating on a lower wage bill,'' said the management.

Therefore, as all other mills had come to an understanding with the workmen and succeeded in lowering the wage bill, it had become imperative for the Chittivalasa mill to follow suit in order "to compete with them on a level playing field''. There was also no truth in the statements made by union leaders that the mills in West Bengal were paying the workers Rs 1,000 more per month.

In fact, many of the Bengal mills were only paying Rs 100 per day per worker and even employing workers on voucher payment of only Rs 50 per day. These facts were well-known in the labour-intensive jute industry and, therefore, the workers in the Chittivalasa mill should also adopt a pragmatic approach and come to an understanding with the management in making the mill viable, added the statement.
