TRAI seeks views of cellular, basic players on WLL

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Sept. 19

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Association of Basic Telecom Operators (ABTO), both parties to the ongoing debate on cell versus WLL phones, to file their views in a written form on issues concerning limited mobility services and uniform licensing.

The TRAI Chairman, Mr Pradeep Baijal, told an `open house' organised by the regulator that given the current telecom business scenario, "we could soon head for a situation where mergers and acquisitions will be a reality. Therefore, we need to create a situation which would facilitate this development in order to benefit the customers."

Mr T.V. Ramachandran, the Director-General of COAI, and Mr S. Ramakrishnan, Managing Director of Tata Teleservices, who spoke on behalf of the basic telecom operators, assured that they would file their views next week.
