MERC lays down tariff norms for wind power projects

Our Bureau

For projects commissioned between December 27, 1999 and April 2003, the tariff structure will be applicable for eight years at Rs 2.25 per unit and increasing at 5 per cent annually.

Mumbai , Sept. 19

THE Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has laid down the tariff to be charged for power sold by wind energy producers.

Per unit tariff under the order has been fixed for three categories - projects commissioned before December 27, 1999, those commissioned between December 1999 and April 1, 2003 and those commissioned after April 2003.

The commission has fixed a rate of Rs 3.50 per unit for the last category. This is the highest considering State Government discontinued sales tax benefits to such projects in April 2003. These wind power units will sell power to MSEB and other utilities at Rs 3.50 per unit for the first year since the date of commissioning of the project, This will increase at 15 paise per unit each year for the next 13 years.

For projects commissioned between December 27, 1999 and April 2003, the tariff structure will be applicable for eight years at Rs 2.25 per unit and increasing at 5 per cent annually. During the specified period has been reduced to 8 years because the State Government had extended sales tax benefits to wind energy projects during this time, a news release issued by MERC said here.

Projects commissioned before December 1999, will charge Rs 2.25 per unit in the base year (1994-95). This will increase at 5 per cent each year for the next 10 years from commissioning. The tariff hike will be frozen for the next three years and a 5 per cent annual increase in rate will be applied for the next seven years.
