Eye-opener for SAARC countries

This is with reference to "Asean: A common economic destiny" (Business Line, September 22). The proposed Asean Economic Community should be an eye-opener to the SAARC countries.

Though it is too premature to think of a South Asian Economic Community similar to the European Community, the possibilities of such an economic union in the future cannot be ruled out completely.

The SAARC countries, particularly, India and Pakistan, should place their economic interests before the political problems, and establish free trade agreements.

For instance, Pakistan is one of the world's largest tea importers but it imports it mainly from Kenya and little from the major tea exporting countries of SAARC — India and Sri Lanka. Establishment of free trade agreements between the two countries will enhance trade and facilitate establishment of South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) in the near future.

C. Ramesh,
