Agri worries

The editorial "Cover for farm income" aptly pointed out that more farmer-friendly steps are needed in India to help farmers to stand up to competition (Business Line, September 24). While the OECD countries spend large sums on massive subsidies in the agri-sector, farmers in countries such as India are vulnerable to the vagaries of nature as well as the markets.

The proposed income insurance scheme may provide some silver lining to the farmers' miserable existence, as it ensures cover against fall in prices below the support level. More important, the Government should take steps to increase public investment in the farm sector to intensify activities and ensure employment generation and a regular income.
