Letters Reducing poverty
This is with reference to "Sustaining reform, reducing poverty" and "Better services key to alleviate poverty" (Business Line, September 22). The World Bank has issued a stern warning to India that it will not be able to reduce poverty and improve human development by 2015 (the targeted date) without socio-economic reforms percolating to the poor who are getting shoddy services in some parts of the country. The agonising questions the report poses to right-thinking people are: First, is it not possible to create a just and compassionate society through economic progress? Second, will it be correct for a country such as India to aspire to become an economic giant and a world power if in the process it is crippled spiritually and emotionally? The hundreds of slums blighting the landscape across the country and the millions living in these insular ghettos are socially invisible to the more fortunate. As Prof J.K. Galbraith, former US Ambassador to India and leading economist, once said: "We ignore it (poverty) because we share with all societies at all times the capacity for not seeing what we do not wish to see". This may be the real reason why public spending never really reaches the poor. Kangayam R. Rangaswamy US Letters to the editor and contributions can be sent by e-mail to: bleditor@thehindu.co.in
