Chittivalasa jute mill impasse continues

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 25

THE impasse at Chittivalasa jute mill is continuing though the State Government has issued three orders referring the dispute over implementation of the Section 9 (A) in the mill to a labour court, prohibiting any further continuation of strike and the consequent lockout.

It had ordered the management to run the mill in the old method till the disposal of the issue. The controversial notice served by the management under Section 9 (A) of the Industrial Disputes Act, resulting in a steep wage-cut and change in other service conditions, has led to the suspension of production at the mill since June.

In response to the demands of the unions, the State Government issued the above GOs dated September 22 and they were released to the unions and the management on Wednesday evening.

In response, the unions expressed their willingness to resume duties as directed by the Government, but the management sought more time to study the orders, seek legal opinion and let its stand be known.

Meanwhile, three union leaders on an indefinite fast at the mill were forcibly removed in the early hours of Thursday and admitted to hospital. One of them, after being discharged from hospital, resumed the hunger strike in front of the collectorate on Thursday afternoon.

At a press meet, Mr A. Ajay Sarma, General-Secretary of the district CITU, to which the recognised mill in the union is affiliated, warned the management that the agitation would be intensified, if it did not honour the orders issued by the Government.

He said the Government, which had taken so long to issue the orders, should expedite the process and force the management to comply with the GOs, as more than 5,000 workers were dependent on the mill.

He said a protest rally would be held here on Friday and later a district bandh would be organised, if the management remained obdurate.
