All major aviation unions plan to form united front

Tunia Cherian George

Mumbai , Sept. 26

IN view of the "shift in the country's civil aviation policy and the changes happening in the sector," the major aviation unions in the country have decided to come together to form a united front to "address issues of common interest."

The front will bring together the five unions representing Air-India, the national carrier, four from Indian Airlines, the domestic carrier, besides unions from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Pawan Hans.

A union spokesperson told Business Line that the representatives of the unions would meet shortly to give shape to the proposed front. The body was yet to be named, he said.

The unions had decided to form a united front in view of the changes proposed in the civil aviation industry. These decisions were not based on any study or cost analysis, he added. "The only thing that is constant about these plans, is change," he said.

He added, "It is high time that all the unions came together and told the Government that they should be kept in picture of any proposed changes."

According to him, the Government should include the unions in negotiations, as the employees were "stake-holders" in these establishments. He added that the unions were "open-minded and had the best interests of their companies and the country at heart."

The five Air-India unions expected to be represented by the proposed front are the Air-India Cabin Crew Association (AICCA), the Air-India Officers' Association (AIOA), the Air-India Aircraft Engineers' Association, the Air-India Employees' Guild and the Indian Flight Engineers' Association, which represents engineers from A-I and IA.

The Indian Airlines unions are the Air Corporation Employees' Union, the Indian Airlines Technicians' Association and the Indian Airline Operators' Union, he said.
