Infrastructure Govt plans major push for civil aviation in Rajasthan Ashwini Phadnis
Udaipur , Sept. 28 THE Union Civil Aviation Ministry is examining a host of issues to increase international air connectivity in Rajasthan, including operating a Haj flight and launching a connection to Bangkok from Jaipur, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Rajiv Pratap Rudy, has said. Besides, the Ministry is planning to invest over Rs 150 crore for improving the airport infrastructure across Rajasthan. It is examining a proposal to upgrade the airport here at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore and constructing a new airport terminal complex in Jaisalmer at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore, which would be able to handle at least 250 passengers, the Minister added. ``The issue of launch of new flights is being considered by the Ministry and a decision is possible as early as the first week of October. The launch of a Jaipur-Bangkok flight will be a big boost for traders and jewellers from the city,'' Mr Rudy said. On the issue of construction of the airport in Udaipur, the Minister said that the design for the new airport would be decided through a competitive selection procedure. The proposal at Udaipur airport includes expansion of the aprons to have more aero-bridges so that airlines could operate larger aircraft including the Airbus A-320 and Boeing 737 to and from the city. The proposal for upgrading the airport at Udaipur is likely to be considered by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at its next board-meeting, the Minister indicated. Similarly, apart from constructing a new terminal at the Jaipur airport, the proposal also includes extending the runway so that the wide-bodied Boeing 747 aircraft can land. The proposed airport will also have an integrated cargo module. The Minister added that the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr Narendra Modi, had indicated that the State was willing to waive the sales tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) on international flights operating from the there.
