Supply Chain Management Safexpress plans to expand hubs in Chennai, Ahmedabad Tunia Cherian George
Mumbai , Sept. 29 SAFEXPRESS, the express player, is in the process of beefing up capacities at its facilities across the country. Following the expansion of its super hub near here at Kalamboli, and at Vadodara, the company plans to expand its hubs in Chennai and Ahmedabad as well. According to Mr Anil Syal, GM, Marketing, the expansion at Kalamboli, which services the company's Mumbai-based customers, has added to its basic infrastructure including its IT capacity, manpower, conveyor systems, and 3PL (third-party logistics) services. The latter, he said, offered customers the entire gamut of services including inbound receipts, warehouse management, order processing, picking & packing, and delivery. The capacity expansion at Chennai will see the company's 3PL warehouse being expanded to 15,000 sq ft from 5,800 sq ft. The hub expansion, likely to be completed by December, would benefit automotive spares, electronics and garment companies, among others in the region. Similarly, the expansion of the main hub at Ahmedabad, to a 1,00,000 sq ft facility from 20,000 currently, is likely to be completed by January/February. Pharmaceuticals companies would be the major beneficiaries of this expansion, he said. Safexpress was looking at a turnover of Rs 250 crore in the current fiscal, as against Rs 205 crore in the fiscal ended 2002-03, representing a 30 per cent growth year-on-year. IT hardware, automobiles, apparel and the pharma industries were likely to drive growth in the coming year as well, he said. He added that Safexpress would be one of the organisers of Logistics 2003, the annual logistics summit, which would be held in Chennai between October 8 and 12. Around 100 exhibitors and over 10,000 trade visitors from across the country were likely to attend the summit. Mr Syal said that logistics players from the UK, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, France and the UAE were also expected to attend the fair. APL Logistics, Sembcorp Logistics and the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority from Dubai were some of the foreign players who had registered for the event, he said. The annual summit would include a two-day seminar on new concepts, innovations, latest technology, case studies, and best practices on logistics and supply chain management, he added.
