Tourism 27.5 pc growth in Kerala tourism Our Bureau
Kochi , Sept. 29 KERALA Tourism has registered tremendous growth during the first six months of the current fiscal, recording a 27.5 per cent growth compared to the national growth rate of 8 per cent, the State Tourism Minister, Prof K.V. Thomas, has said. At this rate, 4,000 rooms with three-star facilities will be required to accommodate the tourist inflow into the State. Places of historical importance and heritage value should be preserved in a commercially viable manner as it provides unlimited scope for tourism development, the Minister said while addressing the 106th annual session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He pointed out that peoples' support and co-operation for timely implementation of tourism projects are equally important for the sustained growth of tourism. The Minister also assured the support and co-operation of the Government for the Indian Chamber Trade and Tourism Fair, scheduled to be held at Fort Kochi in December. Speaking on the occasion, the President of the Chamber, Mr Bharat N. Khona, said the Government should extend all assistance to the private sector for the development of tourism in order to overcome the evil effects of retarded industrial growth and the resultant unemployment. Kerala has virtually provided a new paradigm in the field and the State has come to occupy a prime position in the field. The strategies and promotional efforts undertaken by the Central and State Governments in making Kerala a much sought after tourist destination had to be appreciated, he said. He pointed out that West Kochi area, particularly Mattanchery and Fort Kochi, has emerged as an attractive tourist centre. Though cleanliness is an important factor in attracting tourists, the Fort Kochi beach and the adjoining areas have become a dumping place. He urged the Minister to initiate steps to overcome this problem.
