THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Buses, lorries, taxis and autorickshaws in the State will keep off roads during a 24-hour strike till midnight on Monday to protest frequent hike in fuel prices and the upward revision of motor vehicle tax.

Various motor vehicle workers' unions affiliated to major trade unions, including the CITU, the INTUC the AITUC and the BMS, are expected to join in the State-wide industrial action, according to Mr Elamaram Kareem, convener of the Kerala State Motor Employees Coordination Committee.

Major demands of the motor workers include implementation of a unified Motor Vehicle Act, a check on the fuel price spiral and a rollback of the revised motor vehicle tax.

Essential services have been kept out of the purview of the strike. Newspapers and transport of milk have also been exempted. Normal functioning of schools is expected to be hit during the strike; most schools have declared a holiday on Tuesday.
