Standards & Benchmarks Pepsi India chief says it is tough to follow EU norms Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 29 THE European Union (EU) water norms are theoretically zero chemical content norms and are very difficult to be adopted for finished products, according to Mr Rajiv Bakshi, Chairman of Pepsico India Holdings Pvt Ltd (PIHPL). Mr Bakshi, however, added that the degree of difficulty in the application of EU norms would be the least in the case of soft drinks when compared to other products. "In the case of categories like milk, it is almost impossible to adhere to the EU water norms." Replying to questions following the launch of Pepsico's Aquafina bulk water business on Monday, Mr Bakshi said that the impact of the controversy pertaining to pesticides residues in soft drinks was "short-lived. We are tending back to normal sales now". He also said that the issue basically pertained to comparison of Government results with EU norms, "which is not correct as EU has no finished products reports". Pepsico always followed the best international practices and the safety of the product is beyond doubt, according to him. Aquafina was being launched in large 25-litres packs for the direct-to-home consumer. It is priced at Rs 65.
