`Expedite gauge conversion'

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr Basangouda Patil Yatnal, to take steps to complete work on gauge conversion between Mangalore and Bangalore.

In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, a copy of which was released to the press here, KCCI said the early completion of the work would help increase volume of traffic at New Mangalore Port.

KCCI also suggested that Kankanady Railway Station in Mangalore be renamed as Mangalore Junction and Mangalore Railway Station as Mangalore Central.

It also demanded that Mangalore Railway Division be formed and be included under the South Western Railway Zone headquartered in Hubli. Seeking additional seats while reserving in Mangalore, the memorandum said special vacation trains should be introduced in the region.
