MOVING out of the Kerala backwaters for the first time, the famed snakeboats are going to cruise along the Hussain Sagar waters for four days beginning October 2, promising a visual treat to the residents of the twin cities.
Four boats, each 83 ft long, will take part in the race. Slated to be flagged off on October 2 by the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, the snakeboat race is part of the five-day Keralotsav 2003, which begins a day earlier.
The festival, being organised by Naveena Samskarika Kala Vedi (NSKV), will have an expo and presentation of about 33 folk and art forms of Kerala at the People's Plaza on the Necklace Road, according to Mr S.D. Govindan, Secretary of Naveena Samskarika Kala Kendram (NSKK), the parent body of NSKV.
The organisers also plan to take the race to Kakinada. "In a later phase, we would like to make it an annual event on the Godavari," he said.
Malayalam film star Suresh Gopi and the Tourism Minister of Kerala, Mr K.V. Thomas, are expected to turn up for the event. Mr Govindan said efforts were on to set up an ayurvedic centre on a 10-acre plot near here.
