Health Take note of stroke signs Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept 28 IF a person has sudden onset of severe "thunder clap" headache (the worst headache of his/her life) associated with nausea, vomiting, giddiness, convulsions and transient coma he or she should visit a neurologist, as this may be a warning sign of impending stroke, according to Dr Harish Rastogi, Senior Consultant, Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital of New Delhi. Speaking at the 11th annual conference of the Indian Academy of Neurology (IANCON) here on Sunday, Dr Rastogi said that stroke was the third largest killer after heart diseases and cancer. IANCON had a session on "Recent Advances in Endovascular Treatment of Aneurysms" where Dr Rastogi and Dr Anil Karapurkar, Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology at Bombay Hospital, spoke about the new technologies and perspective in the treatment of aneurysms. Until recently, Dr Karapurkar said, the only surgical approach to the problem was to open the skull and attach a clip across the aneurysm, to prevent the entry of arterial blood. Now, endovascular coil embolization is being carried out as an alternative surgery. The IANCON Organising Secretary, Dr K. Venkateswarlu, said that about 300 national and international experts in the field of neurology are attending the three-day conference.
