Lack of marketing support, working capital hits SSIs

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Sept. 29

LACK of adequate marketing support and working capital has been identified as the major reason for the closure of a large number of small scale industries (SSIs) in the country, as per the quick results of the Third All-India Census of the SSI sector.

Quoting this major finding, the Commissioner of Industries, Andhra Pradesh, Mr Sameer Sharma, said the State Government was trying to evolve a strategy to revive the ailing SSI units in the State using some of the results of the Census.

Talking to newspersons, Mr Sharma said Indus Expo-2003 scheduled to be held during November 2-5 at the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) here, would provide and opportunity to units in the SSI and SME (small and medium enterprises) to exhibit their capabilities through their wares.

The expo would also give these industries the necessary platform for sourcing technology, expertise from the public sector units and Government institutes. A special section on rural industries with the support of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and another on exportable products manufactured by SMEs from AP are a few highlights, he said.

In addition, a buyer-seller meet and a Technology Transfer Centre (TTC) are other important events scheduled. The TTC will not only offer technologies for transfer from major research and technology development institutes, but also provide access to database on information on technology adoption, implementation etc.

The Regional General Manager of NSIC, Mr K. Anand Kumar, said the corporation is keen to provide marketing and financial support to the SSIs. It is actively involved in encouraging them to participate in national and international exhibitions.

The second Indus Expo-2003 is being jointly organised by the NSIC, Department of Industries, AP Government and the Federation of AP Small Industries Association (FAPSIA). About 150 industries from all over the country are expected to take part.
