Tourism `Develop Dhanushkodi as tourist centre' Our Correspondent
Madurai , Sept. 30 AN appeal to the State Government to develop Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram as a tourist centre, where a new track is to be laid by the Railways, was made by the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr A.K. Moorthy, here. While participating at the inaugural function of the 80th anniversary of the Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCC&I) here, he said the Ministry has proposed to introduce a metre gauge train service between Mandapam and Dhanushkodi, a pilgrimage centre, lost due to cyclone long ago.Estimated to cost Rs 20 crore, a project survey has already been ordered. The work will be taken up along with the ongoing gauge conversion works between Madurai and Manamadurai and Manamadurai and Rasmeswaram. The works are expected to be completed around 2005. The State Government can exploit the tourism potential available with its vast stretch of beaches and backwaters. Provision of modern amenities would attract more people from southern districts, he said. The Minister further said that a budgetary allocation has been made for the doubling of the track between Madurai and Dindigul. The work, estimated to cost Rs 96 crore, would be completed next year. This would enable more trains to be run between Chennai and Madurai. He announced that an allotment of Rs 1.2 crore has been made for the development of Koodalnagar railway station, in the north of Madurai. Allotments have also been made for the beautification of the Madurai, Tiruparankundram and Tirumangalam railway stations, he added. The Minister promised to consider a suggestion put forth by TNCCI&I, that of running push and pull services from Madurai to nearby places like Dindigul, Rajapalayam etc. once the double track works were completed.
